It’s Independence Weekend!

These song lyrics are repeating in my head this morning…

Yes and for good reason. I have a BIG audition today as news reporter for a feature film.  After many hours committed to learning the lines; feeling the role and using positive psychology; I feel ready to go forward with confidence on my audition.  Acting is not glamorous but it feels glamorous when you are prepared.  There is nothing glamorous about spending countless hours prepping for auditions.  However, the hard work pays off because of the feeling you get.  It is this natural high of accomplishment.  Artists will understand this.

I managed to balance fourth of July festivities with fun, family time at the beach and the memorization of lines.  I’m finding immense joy in the simplicity that life brings, the small moments with my daughter as she feels the sand in her toes.  These moments inspire me to also be mindful of the sand in my toes and to play in the ocean.  It is time spent with family and friends that I am truly grateful for.  I keep hearing that mantra:  “Play hard, work hard!”  What if we changed it to ” Play easy, work easy!”  I like the sound of that because life is really a state of mind.  If we have the mindset that work and play will be fun and a breeze; it is.  Work is what we make of it.

Alright, well I could go on but I have dress rehearsal for my audition today.   I always prepare my clothes in advance and then have a dress rehearsal as if I have already booked the part.  Until next post, have a beautiful Sunday and do something you really enjoy today!  For me its film acting and a long walk with the family.

What a week!

This week began with the usual.  And then there was Film Class at Art Sake Studio.  This CORE film class opens up the chakras and assists in bringing great truth to acting.  It unleashes vulnerability and allows for people to feel safe in sharing and exploring various emotions.  This week we continued with Meisner Film games and were fortunate to attend a workshop by  Christy Poggi      on empathy.  Since I am a LMHC (Licensed Mental Health Counselor); I must admit that at first, I wasn’t sure what more I could learn about empathy.  Empathy training was a large part of my Master’s program.  However; empathy applied to Film Acting is a very different ball game.  As a counselor we empathize with clients; however, as a film actor we empathize with the character while being truthful to our own vulnerabilities.  As a counselor we are taught boundaries and to stay focused on client, often disregarding our own emotional impulse.  This occurs for good reason in therapy.  However; in film acting, boundaries are loose for good reason.  We are encouraged to take risks with ourselves and actors during scenework.  Speaking of risks, leads me to the word FEAR.

I am scared to death (a bit dramatic, yes) of ACTING.  I have always been afraid of it yet secretly wanted to play the leading lady on General Hospital.  Also, I would secretly want to be Sandra Bullock in all of the romantic comedies.  You see, we all have “inner critics” that scream at us right when we feel we can do something.  The inner critic often says ” it’s too hard”, ” you aren’t good enough”, “that’s impossible”, “You aren’t smart enough.” etc.   But these barriers are imaginary and created, without giving us as a chance to prove the inner critic wrong.  I’m thankful to mentors that have told me to not listen to this chatter.  Yet, I go into the unknown and I am at times scared ______.   You get the idea and can fill in the  blank.  I feel empowered speaking the truth and this will free me.  There is a quote about fear from “The Artist Way” by Julia Cameron.

My updates for this week:  I was cast in an Infomercial for Hand Hygiene at Dr. P. Phillips Hospital.  Blue Sky Production crew based out of Nashville were wonderful folks to work with.  They were professional and had a sense of humor, which created ease on the set.  It was a long day but well worth it.  I actually cried “real tears” during one scene with a young boy (who played my child).  I credit my acting class at Art Sake for giving me tools to illicit tears on film.  It helped for me to do some breathing exercises, to breath into the emotion.  What I am learning is this; Although I fear acting, I’m growing more confident and I attribute this to taking risks.  And that’s a wrap!

The Magic

I am reading this awe-inspiring book called ” The Magic” by Rhonda Byrnes. It from the series of books beginning with The Secret, then “The Power” and now “The Magic” regarding the Law of Attraction.  There is a paragraph at start of first chapter which truly captures the essence of “The Magic”.

It reads “I am here to tell you that the magic you once believed in is true, and it’s the disillusioned adult perspective of life that is false. The magic of life is real and it’s as real as you are.  In fact, life can be far more wondrous than you ever thought it was as a child, and more breathtaking, awe-inspiring, and exciting than anything you’ve seen before.  When you know what to do to bring forth the magic, you will live the life of your dreams.  Then, you will wonder how you ever could have given up in believing in the magic of life!”

The key discussed at the start of this book.  And I say “start” because I have just begun reading this book.  The key is one word: Gratitude.  Yes, many of us daily give thanks for “our bread”, friends, family and say thank you to the stranger who kindly opens the door.  However, the author challenges us to give an abundance of thanks with intention and regularly.  There is a 28 day journey to bring forth the magic into your life by gratitude detailed in the book.  The book also provides activities to increase gratitude.

So I want to say a big THANK YOU to Rhonda Byrne and the team that created this book “The Magic”.  Why?  Because the more I give; the more magical my life becomes.  As Willie Nelson (singer-songwriter) quotes ” When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around.”  I have been aware of gratitude and believe I am a grateful person.  However, I can be doing so much more to express gratitude and give back.

I hope that this blog inspires you, the reader, to continue your journey of attracting magic to your life.  Give, give, give!!!

Day 45 Winter Park

Today there will be two separate posts. The first is all about Winter Park. And the second will be my usual updates.

I recently read an article from Mayor Ken Bradley in The Park Press newspaper February 2013 addition.  First let me say I appreciate Mayor Bradley.  You see, months ago, my family and I moved into a condo. We knew there is a train near by but had NO IDEA how loud that train really was at night.  For several weeks, my husband, baby, dogs and I struggled to sleep through the night. I asked neighbors how they survived the evening.  Many said it took months to years to sleep well.  I began to panic.  I was already sleep deprived with a 14 month old baby and two obnoxious dogs. How would I survive another period of sleep deprivation, when I had just recovered from the first one?  This must be how new moms feel after having irish twins.

Anyways, I emailed Mayor Bradley expressing my concerns about the train.  He so kindly responded informing me that efforts are being made but that it will take time.  This was some of his response from email.

“We are working on creating a “quiet zone”.  In theory, the trains won’t have to blow their whistles.  This requires various crossing changes.  The work plan does take several years, but we are working on it.”

Mayor Bradley also was thoughtful in forwarding my email to the city manager.  Thank you Mayor Bradley for your response, patronage and willingness to be an advocate for change.  Now back the article I referred to at start of this blog entry. Day 39

It is the day after Valentines Day.  Here are the highlights from today.

*Usually, (on previous Valentines Days) I would be feeling guilty for the amount of chocolate I’d eat.  I always indulge on holidays.  But this “day after” is different. Why?  Because I am feeling better than ever, well better (meaning most days) then I did when I was a Vegetarian.  I am an “almost” vegan.  I still eat some egg products but no dairy.  My skin is clearer than ever, lost weight and have more energy as a result of this switch.

* Celebrated with our daughter Olivia Daisy her first Valentines Day party with friends at school.  She is only 17 months and very social, our little one.  While her classmates were sitting in their chairs eating; Olivia was devising a plan to seek food from a neighboring boys’ plate.  The boy became distracted by toys and she quickly jumped on over.  She also enjoyed sitting on mommy’s lap.

* And last highlight of the day: the elusive sleep.  No more typing, just sleeping. Goodnight!

Day 37 Valentines Day Eve

I love Valentines Day!  I wish I could spend all week making cupcakes, telling people how much I love them etc.  I wish I could spend an exuberant amount of time decorating, planning parties related to V-day.  But let’s be honest, I am a working mom and I I just don’t have that kind of time.

So I guess I will be celebrating Valentines day all year by doing simple acts of kindness for others, loving my family every day and cherishing life’s little pleasures.

Highlights for today:

* Being fully aware that I made the right choice.  Fear can block us (even subconsciously) from making the best decision.  I chose to completely surrender to any fear of the unknown while moving forward with my creative pursuits.  It feels really good to surrender my frustration, fears and anxiousness.  And instead I continue to be optimistic that I made the right choice.  And all good things come to those who “wait”.  But instead of the word “wait”; I choose to say “All good things come to those who believe, persevere and trust.”

* I made Vegan cupcakes that actually taste great! (at least to me!) Except that they fell apart while removing them from the pan. Bummer! Instead of lamenting over my cupcakes; I decided to make the best of it.  I put several cupcakes together to make small hearts.  That worked and as for the crumbles, they will be good in pudding, ice cream etc…

* Just feeling grateful overall.  I had a great time with my cousin today and playing with Olivia (my daughter).  Grateful for the small moments which feel like anything but small.

Day 32-34

I have decided to write 60 posts (daily posts, well for the most part) about my personal journey on evolving as an artist (singer, actor, writer).  Just thought to catch you up, in case you haven’t read the first 31 posts. (=

Here are a few highlights from days 32-24

Day 32  Friday

* Enjoyed time with a friend who also shares a passion for songwriting and singing.  It was a wonderful dinner with yummy vegan food (Thanks Georgia!).  We will be continuing to meet up and co write songs together.  I cannot wait to collaborate! Stay tuned for songs!

* I recovered from a long Wednesday and Thursday in which I worked (leading groups for grief and loss), went on an audition to Tampa, and functioned as a full-time mommy to our sweet Olivia Daisy.

* I didn’t blog on Friday, felt some blogger guilt but quickly got over it.

Day 33 Saturday

* More resting but mostly just enjoyed the day with family.  (Movie watching, WP Farmer’s Market etc)

Day 34 Sunday

* Went to the Valentine Concert in Central Park (Winter Park, Florida) featuring Michael Andrew & Swingerhead.  Enjoyed this event with family and new friends.

That is all I care to share tonight.  I am yawning and ready to go to sleep.  I know it is only 9:30, you may say.  My response would be “Welcome to mommy hood!  I prefer to preserve my sanity.”   And by “Sanity”, I mean the following equation:

Rest= Sanity= Happiness= A good mommy, a good friend, a good partner, a happy person.
